My lil one got me watching this with him. And it’s not a bad show, as TV goes. Never boring anyways, and some good writing.

I have watched the first episode of Legend of the Seeker now, and thought I would write down some thoughts about this adaptation of Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series.
I guess that being fair to this will be hard for me. I am never very satisfied with a movie adaptation of a book, especially a book that I really like a lot.
“Dumbed down” would be the first term that comes to mind. Sure it was ok and they did a decent job of showing some of the major happenings in the first part of the book. Plus they added some stuff that is just briefly referred to in the book to help the viewer understand better what has happened and why things are as they are.
I am not going to obsessively list every scene and every wrong thing they did… I will leave that to the more OCD pundits who I am sure are already posting long lists! I was sad to see them turn the Book of Counted Shadows from the key to unlock the magic of Orden into nothing but “a book of power!”
As for the characters, I liked Kahlan’s portrayal most of all. The actress that plays Kahlan was a very good choice, and one that looks a lot like how I pictured her in my mind. Her Confessor power was handled very well, in my opinion.
The actor playing Richard looks a bit too young for the role, but I think given time he might do well.
Zedd looks a lot like I imagined him and was ok. Chase, likewise. Darken Rahl, on the other hand, looked nothing like I expected he should. But there was not enough of him to see how this actor does. I will give them a fair chance.
I do not mean to sound negative. As a TV show it was good, and the scenery and such were really beautiful. I likely need to see this again to really have any stronger opinions.
I realize they cannot directly translate the book to the screen, and things must be changed, cut, and added to make a story that flows well in a visual medium. So I didn’t hate it, but I do wish they had been able to include a bit more of the details. Everything was a bit more rushed than I would have liked.
It was worth watching, though, in the end.

I had learned some time ago from Terry Goodkind’s official website that his series of novels, The Sword of Truth, was coming to television this fall. Sam Raimi is the creative genius behind this, with Terry’s full support.
I finally got to see pictures and some teaser video of the series beginning, entitled “Legend of the Seeker” and from what I can tell, it looks pretty good. They did very good with Kahlan. Richard seems a little short and skinny compared to what I pictured in my mind.
The series is supposed to premier on November 1. So I will be watching and judging!
The trailer is at legendoftheseeker.com.
